Docs Running a server
server.cfg
Every setting in server.cfg, what it takes, and how the server checks it.
server.cfg sits beside the server and holds its settings, one name = value a line. Every value is checked when the server starts: one that is out of range stops the server with the line and the reason, never a guess. --check says the same without starting it.
The settings
| Setting | What it is |
|---|---|
server_id | the server's id, written by --register (registering) |
name | 3 to 48 characters, shown in the list. A name may not claim to be official: not Official, Team Vanilla, SFLegacy or Staff |
motd | the message every player reads on joining, at most 200 characters. Also edited in the game (F9, Channels) |
region | a word or two for the list, at most 24 characters |
bind_address | which of this machine's addresses to listen on. Empty: all of them |
port | the UDP port, 27240 to begin with. It also answers the list's "who is there?" |
public_address | the address players reach the server at, when that is not the one Team Vanilla sees its heartbeat come from. Empty: that one. A host name (a dynamic DNS name) works too |
public_port | the outside port, when your router forwards a different one to port |
max_players | 1 to 512 |
reserved_slots | slots kept for staff |
min_rank, max_rank | who may join: ranks 0 (Private) to 74, the real rank, never a Fake Rank Mark's |
min_kd | the lowest kill/death ratio that may join (0: anyone) |
password | a private server: players type it to join |
listed | yes or no. No: off the list, and friends still join by address |
client_data | the Soldier Front game data folder. Empty: data/ beside the server |
upload_kbps | the most of your upload pack downloads may use, in all |
max_downloaders | how many players download packs at once; the rest wait their turn |
log_days | how many days of logs are kept |

A lost server.cfg is written again, with these values, by --defaults, which leaves every file that is there as it is.
What is not in it
- The Owner. Ownership is the registration at Team Vanilla, not a line in a file: losing
server.cfgnever loses the server, and editing it never grants it. - Staff:
staff.cfg, or the game's staff panel (staff). - Channels:
channels.cfg(channels). - The shop:
shop.cfg(the server's shop). - The key:
server.key, made on the first run and never shared.
