What OpenSF is

The game

legacysf.exe plays Soldier Front's own maps, weapons, soldiers, sounds and lobby art, read from the game's data where it lies. The program around them is new: the renderer, the menus, the netcode, the options.

The server

LegacySFServer is the same server Team Vanilla runs, for anyone to run on Windows or Linux. It plays all 12 game types, with bots, recordings, its own staff, channels, shop and content.

One account

Team Vanilla's account service keeps each player's sign-in, rank, record, SP, items, clan and friends, and lists the servers. It is the same everywhere, so nobody starts over on a new server.

Anyone can run a server, the game reads one public list of them, and a server can add content that players download as they join. Through all of it a player keeps one Team Vanilla account and one record, on every server.

What is new

What a player of the original notices first, and what a server owner gets.

Past the old frame cap

The original client holds itself to 32 frames a second. Soldier Front Legacy has no cap of its own: the frame limit is yours, from 30 to 360 frames a second, 144 to begin with, and vertical sync is a switch.

  • DirectX 12 first, then DirectX 11, then OpenGL. A renderer that cannot start hands over to the next and says so.
  • Real pixels at any Windows scaling: a 2880 x 1800 screen at 125% is drawn at 2880 x 1800.
  • A window or the whole screen (borderless, so Alt+Tab is instant), in 4:3, 5:4, 16:10, 16:9 or 21:9, stretched as the original was on a wide screen or kept in shape between black bars.
  • Anti-aliasing at 2x, 4x or 8x, and texture filtering up to 16x.

The options

Controllers as well as the mouse

Xbox controllers (anything XInput), DualShock 4 and DualSense, by cable or Bluetooth.

  • Every action is a button you set as you set a key: click its plate, press the button. Out of the box, A jumps, RT fires, LT scopes and the d-pad opens the radio lists.
  • In the menus the left stick is the pointer and A clicks, so every lobby page works without a mouse.
  • Look speed, up and down against across, dead zones, invert, a smooth or a linear stick, and vibration for hits, blasts and shots.
  • No aim assist. A controller plays the same match as a mouse, on the same terms.

One account on every server

  • Make a Team Vanilla account in the game: a username and a password, no email address.
  • Your rank, record, SP, Coins, weapons, clan, friends and mail are Team Vanilla's to keep and follow you to every server, official or community.
  • A server never sees your password. Your game shows it a short-lived ticket that Team Vanilla signed.
  • Friends, whispers and mail go between your game and Team Vanilla directly, never through the server you are on, so no server owner can read them.

A server of your own

  • One program for Windows, or for Linux on x86-64 and ARM64, with a systemd unit and a container file.
  • Register it on Team Vanilla's control panel. It is listed once Team Vanilla can reach it from the internet.
  • Name your own staff (Admin, Game Master, Moderator), set the channels and the message of the day, and choose who may join: a rank range, a kill/death ratio, a password.
  • Add your own weapons, maps and characters as packs, which players download as they join (50 MB in all), and sell them in your server's shop for SP.
  • Matches on your server count toward rank and record as they do anywhere else.

Every game type

All 12 game types of the original's waiting room, each played by its own rules on the server: Team Battle with its Destroy, Take Back, Escape and Dual missions, Team Deathmatch, Single Battle, Sniper Mode, Capture the Captain, Captain Mode, Horror Mode, Horror Mode 2, Team Slayer, Occupy, Pirate Mode and Training, across 40 maps.

Bots fill a room and play the objective: they plant and defuse, carry the item home, take the consoles and the strongholds.

The same game for everyone

  • Base weapons, forces and parts keep their official numbers on every server. An owner can add; nobody can rebalance.
  • No server can sell a base item below Team Vanilla's price, or spend your SP without your say.
  • Team Vanilla checks every match report, and one that could not have happened is refused.
  • Report a player or call a vote to kick from the match menu. Staff see the reports and the match recordings.
  • A map keeps its own light, hour and sky, and smoke and flash-bangs are drawn in full: no option thins them.

Windows, Linux, macOS and Android

Made to play on all four and to host on Windows and Linux. Every server takes players from every system alike: one account, one record, the same match.

Windows

DirectX 12, then DirectX 11, then OpenGL. Xbox, DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers. The game and the server.

The game and the server are in build 1

Linux

OpenGL ES 3 on your own graphics driver, on X11 or on Wayland through XWayland. Xbox, DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers. Plays and hosts, with This PC as on Windows; the server runs on x86-64 and ARM64, as a service or in a container.

The game and the server are in build 1

macOS

Apple Silicon, through ANGLE on Metal, with Apple's own game controller support. Plays on every server; a Mac holds no server.

Built on a Mac: not in build 1 yet

Android

OpenGL ES 3, the Soldier Front data carried in its own package. Touch controls made for the match, or a controller. Plays on every server; a phone holds no server.

Why we made it

Every official Soldier Front server has been shut down, and the game is not sold anywhere today. What is left is a 2004 client that holds itself to 32 frames a second, knows no controller, and can only reach the servers it was built for.

We reconstructed Soldier Front so it can be played on today's PCs and hosted by anyone who wants to, with one account and one record for every player, and without changing what Soldier Front was: the maps, their light and hours, the weapons and their numbers are the original's.

Why we made it, and what it does for everyone
