Where Soldier Front Legacy plays and hosts: Windows, Linux, macOS and Android, what each uses, and what build 1 carries.
Soldier Front Legacy is made to play on Windows, Linux, macOS and Android, and to host on Windows and Linux. Every server takes players from every system alike: one account, one record, the same match.
What build 1 carries
| The game | The server | |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | in this build | in this build (64-bit) |
| Linux | in this build (x86-64) | in this build, for x86-64 and ARM64 |
| macOS (Apple Silicon) | not in this build yet | none: a Mac plays, it does not host |
| Android | in this build | none: a phone plays, it does not host |
Each one is on the download page once the build carries it. Running the Windows game under Wine, Proton, CrossOver or Parallels is not supported.
What each one uses
| Plays | Hosts | Graphics | Window, keys and mouse | Sound | Controllers | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows | yes | yes | DirectX 12, then DirectX 11, then OpenGL ES through ANGLE | Win32 | XAudio2 | XInput and HID: Xbox, DualShock 4, DualSense |
| Linux | yes | yes | OpenGL ES 3 on the system's own driver (Mesa's, or NVIDIA's) | X11, or Wayland through XWayland | ALSA, which PulseAudio and PipeWire provide | Linux input devices: Xbox, DualShock 4, DualSense |
| macOS | yes | no | OpenGL ES through ANGLE's Metal back end | Cocoa | Core Audio | Apple's GameController framework |
| Android | yes | no | OpenGL ES 3 | the phone's own | OpenSL ES | Android input |
On Windows and Linux the game plays the data of your own Soldier Front installation: the download goes into that folder. The Android package carries its data inside. On Linux, where file names are case-sensitive, a data folder copied from Windows (Area for area) is found either way.
Where each keeps its files
| Settings | Packs from servers | Saved sign-in | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows | beside the game, in its folder | %LOCALAPPDATA%\LegacySF\content\ | protected by Windows for your user |
| Linux | ~/.config/legacysf/ | ~/.cache/legacysf/content/ | in ~/.config/legacysf/, a file only you can read |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Soldier Front Legacy/ | ~/Library/Caches/Soldier Front Legacy/content/ | in Application Support, a file only you can read |
| Android | the app's own folder | the app's own folder | the app's own folder |
Linux
- The game is for 64-bit PCs with glibc 2.28 or newer (Debian 10, Ubuntu 18.10, Fedora 29, RHEL 8 and later). It needs an X11 desktop, or Wayland with XWayland, an OpenGL ES 3 graphics driver and libcurl, which nearly every desktop already has. Unpack it and run
./legacysf. - The game has This PC, as the Windows game does: a quick private host on your own machine, where nothing counts toward rank, record or SP.
- The server runs on x86-64 and ARM64 (Linux and containers).
macOS
- Apple Silicon only (M1 or newer), on macOS 12 or later. Intel Macs are not supported.
- Unsigned at first. The first time, macOS will not open it: allow it once in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Open Anyway.
- Keep the app and its data folder together. To keep the game in Applications, move the data folder to
~/Library/Application Support/Soldier Front Legacy/data, where it finds it too. - A Mac plays on Team Vanilla's and the community's servers, Training and bot rooms included. It has no This PC and holds no server of any kind.
Android
- A phone or tablet on Android 8 or later (64-bit) plays on Team Vanilla's and the community's servers, with the game data carried in its own package. The first start sets the data up in the game's own folder, once: keep about 3 GB free for it.
- Touch controls in a match: a stick that comes to the left thumb (pushed part way it walks, quietly; all the way it runs), and for the right thumb Fire (which also aims while held), Aim, Jump, Crouch, Reload, Swap and Use, with Menu, Chat and Score along the top. Swipe anywhere else to look. Size, look speed and opacity are in Options, Controls, Touch, where Arrange on the screen moves and sizes each control on its own.
- A controller (Xbox, PlayStation or any Bluetooth pad) or a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse works too, and puts the touch controls away while it is used; a touch brings them back.
- It has no This PC and holds no server of any kind.
- Servers that want Android players to join keep their packs' pictures to 2,048 pixels a side (packs).
Hosting
Servers run on 64-bit Windows and on Linux (x86-64 and ARM64): a PC, a VPS, a dedicated server or a small ARM board. No macOS server is published, and running one on a Mac is not supported. See running a server.
