Docs Running a server

Channels

A server's channels: channels.cfg, its fields, the kinds of channel, and the editor in the game.

A server's channels are what a player chooses first after joining it: each one a lobby of its own, with its rooms. A new server has the original thirteen. The Owner and Admins change them in the game (the staff panel's Channels tab) or in channels.cfg with the server stopped.

The original thirteen

Each holds as many as the server's max_players (128 to begin with).

A channel may also name the game types its rooms may offer (all, to begin with), the maps they may use, and whether it is hidden from those who may not enter it; the editor in the game sets all three. A server has 64 channels at most.

  • A file that cannot be read falls back to the original thirteen, and the log says so: a server is never left with none.
  • A channel's name may not claim to be official, as for a server's name.
  • Clan War channels hold clan battles: there, two members of the same clan may share a room even when one blocks the other.

The editor in the game

F9, Channels: the list on the left with New, Move up, Move down and Delete under it; the channel picked on the right (its name, kind, lowest and highest rank, lowest K/D, how many soldiers, hidden or not, its games and maps) with Revert and Save. Under them, the server's message of the day, written back into server.cfg when it is saved. Everyone joining the server reads it.

Game types and maps for the whole server

F9, Games, for the server's Game Masters, Admins and Owner: a tick for each game type and ON or OFF for each map, with Revert and Save. Switch off Horror Mode, Horror Mode 2, the Pirate Ship or any other, and no room on the server is made with it or changed to it; a room that already has it must pick another before it starts. A map switched off is never offered, and All Random and Hot Random never draw it. At least one game type stays on.

It is kept in games.cfg, beside channels.cfg:

modes_off = HOR,HR2,PIR
maps_off = killhouse

Game types go by their short names (TB, TDM, SB, SNP, CTC, CPT, HOR, TRN, TS, OCC, HR2, PIR) or full ones; maps by their ids. With no games.cfg, everything is played. A channel's own games and maps narrow this further, never back.
